Working and communicating with Japanese colleagues: A practical approach (for Europeans)

Designed for Europeans working with Japanese colleagues or clients, this programme will teach you everything you need to know to better understand your colleagues and improve efficiency in your communication and daily work.

Duration: 1 day

Audience: Europeans working with Japanese colleagues or clients. There is no prerequisite for attending this programme; nevertheless, in order to fully take advantage of the training, we recommend that participants have at least six months of work experience in the organization before attending the programme.

Languages: The program can be delivered in English, French, German or Dutch

Programme:

  • Facts about Japan which help explain its cultural foundation
  • Key concepts of Japanese culture (e.g. group orientation, hierarchy, harmony, honne/tatemae)
  • Significant ways in which the Japanese and European ways of doing business differ (e.g. meetings, decision-making, negotiation, socializing, information sharing)
  • Working in a Japanese organization in Europe: How do Japanese see us? How to best meet their expectations? How to get things done?
  • Case studies
  • Communication: how to become more effective in communicating with Japanese colleagues (Characteristics, role plays and best practices.)
  • Protocol and business etiquette
  • Q&A

The trainer will illustrate the points discussed with examples from his or her own experience working with Japanese in Japan and in Europe.

Expected Outcomes: By the end of the training, the participant will:

  • Have a deeper understanding of key concepts of Japanese culture and Japanese work practices and how they differ from his/her own
  • Have learned the necessary tools to adapt his/her working style accordingly
  • Have learned to be more efficient in his/her communication with his/her Japanese colleagues
  • Be more familiar with Japanese business protocol
